I am pretty happy with the recent experience at rent smart. I posted my review in Yelp although I am not sure if the posting is shown to the public.

At the last minute searching for a new apartment - at that time I wasn't satisfied with units that I had seen - I walked in Rent Smart office in Lakeview as a sort of the last resort, but I wasn't desperate because I could extend the lease in the current apartment. Anyway, when I walked in, Chris Arpasi (real estate agent) welcomed me and took care of my needs although I didn't have any appointment. The bottom line is that as a person who searches for the apartment in an ad-hoc manner (like searching through craigslist on and on hoping for luck), relying on an real estate agent who has an access to MLS as well as experience in searching apartment never hurts, and can actually educate you to be a better apartment shopper. What happened was that the agent found apartments that meet my specific needs (lots of sunlight, energizing vibe sort of things) through database search, and made appointments in such a timely fashion. The next day (I searched the apartment with him for two days) I found an apartment that I was looking for. My advice is that you don't have to be independent on this, get a help from a seasoned and caring agent like him. It will save your time and energy, and get you a feeling that you are taken care of without costing a dime.

The next day, we saw the apartment I liked the most. He was on time (I wasn''t!). I loved the apartment and he found out all details I wanted to know. If he didn''t know the answer, he found out for me. Not only was he professional, but he was very honest. My last agent from another realty group lied to me and tricked me into a lease a year ago so I was skeptical. Not only did he help me fill out the application he was able to tell me that I was approved the same day (which he told me was unlikely). The next day, we signed the lease (he informed me it was not official until the landlord signed it-this seems to be what everyone is screaming about on here) and I received the keys the next day! The apartment was just as described. I could not have asked for a better experience. I will definitely never go to another agent .

"I had been searching local listings for an apartment in the Wicker Park area for a week or so with very little luck, until I got in touch with with Rent Smart Chicago. I explained to an agent that I needed a place to live within the week. Unfortunately, when it came time to move in, the owner of the property signed with someone else. I had an excellent experience with Rent Smart Chicago.

There are a ton of reviews online for the various apartment finding services in Chicago, a lot of them which are invariably negative. It seemed largely like a hit or miss experience, but coming from New Jersey to Chicago for the first time, I had very little knowledge of the areas, and decided an apartment finding service would be the way to go. As these things go, my friend who had recently moved to Chicago had heard of good experiences with Rent Smart, so he recommended it to me. I definitely made sure to do a significant amount of research online through sites like Craigslist so I knew the types and prices of apartments (studios) I was interested in.

I was out of the country at the time I started my search, which made it even harder for me to do the apartment search solo, so I sent out requests for information to the various apartment finding services. Most of them ignored me altogether or didn''t take me seriously, but Janelle Galto from Rent Smart got to me immediately the day after I put in my request and asked me for more details (price, neighborhood, pet preferences, etc.). After giving her that information, she sent me a list of property listing to look at, which I whittled down some more as I got a better idea of what I wanted (studio, utilities included, etc.) We went back and forth with a few iterations over email and every time I asked for more information or adjusted my preferences, she did an excellent and timely job of replying with an updated list.

Ultimately, I scheduled a 3-day trip to Chicago, and set up an appointment with Janelle on the afternoon I got in thinking that I could look around the first two days and sign on the last. Janelle picked us up off the blue line, then took us to see the apartments from my latest list. I ended up finding a studio about 3 or 4 places in that I immediately liked. We asked to go back to their Rent Smart offices to do another search through their database to see if we had missed anything over email. She drove us back to the office and helped us through the search, letting us navigate their proprietary system. After we were confident about the studio we had liked, we drove over to the management company and signed the lease that very evening.

The apartment search was painless, I found a place I liked and I had 2 days left in Chicago to explore. Janelle even voluntarily drove us back to our hotel downtown after the signing.

While I''m sure the experience with Rent Smart can vary depending on your agent, Janelle was an absolute pleasure to work with. She was very professional, never applied unnecessary pressure or made it uncomfortable for me to patiently make a decision, and helped me in the search and in the move above and beyond what was required of her job. I''d highly recommend Janelle and Rent Smart.

In starting the apartment search, I had initially sent requests for information out to several rental agencies in Chicago figuring I would choose the agency that offered the best service. Janelle promptly sent me an introductory email along with a few questions for more information. After getting an idea of what I was looking for, we exchanged quite a number of emails narrowing down and refining my list over the course of a few weeks. When I got to Chicago, I had mapped out a few days for the apartment search, but we were able to look at a few places and close on the first evening.

I thought the strength of Janelle as an agent was her promptness and the timeliness of her follow-up. From the emails to being picked up off the blue line to being dropped off at the hotel afterwards, she was always on time. I can't speak for the organization as a whole, but I can say that my experience with a couple of leasing agents was excellent. The Agents compiled a list of apartments in the neighborhood we wanted that met our specifications and fell within our price range, a great thing to have especially because we were relocating from out of state. We were operating within a very limited time frame, and Rent Smart was the main reason we were able to find a place on such short notice at all; they responded quickly to emails, and was always accessible on the phones. Who knew that finding an apartment in Chicago could be so challenging? My roommate and I moved here from Milwaukee and were a bit naive to think that we could simply walk around the neighborhood we wanted to live in (Buctown, Wicker Park) and just find an apartment on a Saturday afternoon. We tried but ended up playing phone tag with landlords or in most cases never getting a return call. Frustrated, we turned to Craigslist. Again, we spent a few hours calling only to get voice mail or no calls back. On Sunday, we stumbled across a Rent Smart ad and placed a call at 10:30 in the morning. We were surprised to find that a live person answered the phone. We were immediately connected to a nice guy named Juan Soto. Juan took down all of our information and said he would do a search and get back to us within an hour. I was a bit concerned but then surprised when 45 minutes later Juan sent us an email with 6 properties in the areas we wanted to see. He then called us and set up appointments - two for that afternoon and three for the following Monday. We met Juan at the first property on Sunday. It was a nice place but just not the right feel fro us, we passed on it and the other place we saw that day, but on Monday, we saw the place o that was perfect and only $20 over our budget. When we old Juan what we wanted to spend, he said that he would see if the landlord was negotiable. He called us on Tuesday afternoon and told us the landlord would take our offer and would reduce the price of parking as well. The process to rent was really smooth. We provided everything to Juan and did not have to deal with the landlord or any processing department. Jusn called us on Wednesday morning and told us we were approved. My roommate and I wer very pleased with how it all worked out. I would very much recommend Rent Smart and our agent Juan Soto.
